What a wonderful entry Janet. I have nothing but admiration for all your travels with the boys over the years. Now with two little ones of our own I have more of an inkling (and greater awe) for what you relate here. The last minute packing, happy little travelers, tears of disappointment, adventurous spirits, throwing up, the weariness of it all and the shoes...ah, the shoes...I love the thought of James wanting "Dandu" to head off into the dark tropics. An adventurous gene that I see daily expressed in his daughters :) Sheer delight to read Janet. And the finale of the view. My eyes were dazzled by the restorative beauty. A lovely piece of writing!

Ms. MacDonald wrote a book after that called "Onions in the Stew." I've read it twice and it's wickedly funny - definitely recommended reading.

Oh Janet, I thought you might be interested in reading Maylynn's entry about Spring (http://maylynn.wordpress.com/2008/01/03/from-winter-to-spring/). I just read it and thought immediately of you and your entry.

Keep looking for those signs of Spring Janet. It's very wet here in Seattle at the moment but we are enjoying the days getting a bit longer. It was noticeable to me today as I picked Caitlin up from her usual playdate on Thursday afternoons. As we were getting ready to leave, shortly before 5pm, there were still streaks of light left in the sky...We'll enjoy watching the progress of the buds for you too. Love

Thanks for the lovely description of fondness for my grandfather's books!

Just an aside, however: the illustrations he included in "All Sails Set" and "Call It Courage" were done in pen and ink, and were not "wood-cut illustrations," despite the number of used-book dealers who describe them as such in their listings.
