It was uncanny

What an eerie feeling I got this morning when I was browsing some old books here in my local church in Dublin (Ireland) and happened to open one which had the following inscription.

What was eerie about this was that the handwriting reminded me very much of my mother’s – and yet this inscription was written in 1910 and my mother hadn’t even been born then.  Her birth year was 1912.  And furthermore, my mother grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota; Omaha, Nebraska, and Winchester, Massachusetts.  So is this just the style of handwriting in the first part of the 20th century?  On both sides of the Atlantic?
